Android outsmarts Apple's iOS

Just like Microsoft Windows captured the major PC OS share as compared to Mac, the same way it is now Android which is the choice of a majority of smartphone users.

According to technology research firm IDC, a staggering 81 percent of the smartphones shipped worldwide in the third quarter of this year were running Google's mobile operating system. This is up from 74.9 percent during the same time last year, IDC found.

In the opposing camp, Apple's numbers have fallen. The worldwide market share of iOS, the operating system that powers iPhones, dropped during the third quarter to 12.9 percent from 14.4 percent, according to IDC.

Do you ever wonder why? Well iOS is equally p[potent and strong - but the iPhones are freaking expensive. The chart below shows the average selling price for an iPhone last quarter was $635. But the average price for a smartphone running Android -- there are many manufacturers -- was only $268.

On the contrary, smartphones running Android's operating system, Llamas said, can be picked up for as little as $50 in China.
