With previous releases of Samsung smartphones, Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3, the Korean conglomerate pushed out two different versions, LTE and non-LTE. For the non-LTE/International version, Samsung shipped out smartphones with its own Exynos SOC while the LTE version, mainly intended for customers in U.S. and Europe, packed in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SOC instead, as Exynos didn’t support LTE.
However, this year’s Exynos 5 Octa SOC finally came with support for LTE but Samsung still decided for its U.S. variant of Galaxy S4 to stick with Snapdragon SOC once again. This lead to negative tech press as they were criticized for the lack of an eight-core chip in the U.S…
In the light of the above events, the head of Samsung Mobile and the co-CEO of Samsung Electronics J. K. Shin, shed light on the absence of Exynos Octa SOC from U.S. and European variants. Shin revealed that while their new Exynos Octa SOC does support 4G/LTE, the use of the two processors was a decision made because of supply and demand.
Shin continued to say that the company chose processors that provide a similar consumer experience and hence the average Joe on the street won’t notice a difference in performance. With the said, Shin stated that U.S. and European markets will continue to receive the Snapdragon 600 variant of Galaxy S4.
As evident from reviews on U.S. variant of Galaxy S4, the device performs really well in terms of benchmarks as compared with its competitors, and incorporates possibly the best mobile GPU at this time. Are you disappointed by Samsung’s decision to feature Snapdragon SOC instead of Exynos Octa?
